If you are 15 years or older you can start work. Every employee, regardless of age, has rights and responsibilities. You may have covered some of this at school but it is important to understand the following if you are looking for a job. Your employer must be able to provide answers to the following.
- Your pay rate per hour
- Determine if you are employed as Full-time, Part-time or Casual
- Your hours of work such as start and finish times as well as breaks
- What are your duties or tasks in the job?
- If you are on a probation period – how many days or months?
Your responsibilities are to complete your duties, be punctual and reliable and follow the workplace policies, procedures, health and safety rules.
You will also be required to provide a TFN ( tax file number), bank account details where your pay will go, and the name of your superannuation fund (you can set one up on-line or just go with the super fund the company uses until you want to make a change).
It’s good idea to get your TFN and set up your bank account prior to or whilst applying for jobs, this will help to avoid any delays once you start your employment.
