Finding Employment

Did you know at least 80% of all jobs are not advertised? Sometimes an employer will put up a notice on their shop window or ask their contacts if they know someone. You may even find out about a job from a previous Work Experience employer.

FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS

Think about asking everyone you know to listen out for any opportunities. It can be very useful finding work through family and friend connections in the industry. Go to community events and get to know other people who may be able to help you in your job search.

NEWSPAPERS

Newspaper advertisements often list job vacancies. Read the ads in the local paper. You can find these delivered every week to your house or visit the local library to access newspapers.

INTERNET EMPLOYMENT WEBSITES

A large number of jobs are advertised on the internet. You will need to follow the specific instructions to apply for each job. You will usually need an electronic copy of your resume to be able to apply online.
If you don’t have access to the internet at home, try your local library, or even school. See over the page for a list of websites that have lots of information about jobs, advertised positions, traineeships and apprenticeships.

INTERNET RESEARCH

Many companies use their own website to advertise and recruit employees. Think about the companies that you would like to work in and spend some time looking at their company profiles and their pages for HR or People. It may take some time to find the right links and then to complete the recruitment process.  Be ready and have all your e-copy documents ready to attach.

UWORKIN / TALENT COMMUNITIES

These websites are put together by various local communities. Both Brimbank Council and Melton Council have their own talent communities that help locals find jobs.

RECRUITMENT AGENCIES

Private recruitment agencies can often provide casual work opportunities for school leavers looking for a job between studying, travel or other employment opportunities. They often have links to larger organisations who are looking for temporary or permanent staff. For example, Horner Recruitment employ school leavers to fill temporary jobs for companies during the Christmas period. They are based in the Tullamarine region and supply workers for the transport and logistics industry as well as others.
